The musical journey of Kurt’s evolution in season 2: In which Glee Music has far more context than I ever thought.

triddlegrl:

“The script gets written, songs are chosen that fit the context.”That tweet keeps popping up in my memory, so I decided to look at season two a little closer. If all of the Glee music is chosen with context in mind I think it adds an interesting depth to the show. I know our favorite thing to complain about is badly chosen songs and random numbers thrown here or there and I’m never going to argue that the writers and recording studio spend hours analyzing lyrics, but after having done this I do think we don’t give them enough credit for their creativity. I think we should change the way we view the evolution of story lines on this show. If songs are truly not selected purely for commercial value then it interests me to go through an episode as it is presented, examine the song and try to see the characters in the song, because that song has something to say about the context of the scene (no matter how trivially).

Themed episodes and tribute eps are their own body of course and they probably get formulated differently but I’d like to examine the character arch of Kurt in season two based solely on an examination of music and its context. Because that’s what I do for fun. Under the readmore.
